Chelsea striker Daniel Sturridge happy with goal against Sunderland
Chelsea striker http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Daniel-Sturridge-c10076 revealed he was delighted with his goal against Sunderland over the weekend, which resulted in the Blues’ 2-1 win at the Stadium of Light. With a late consolation goal by the Black Cats, the match could have easily ended
in a 1-1 draw if the 22-year-old striker had not found the back of the net.
Sturridge struck in the 51st minute after a somewhat quiet first half, beating the Sunderland goalkeeper Simon Mignolet, who made the mistake of leaving the line. More than the stopper, former Manchester United defender Wes Brown presented Sturridge
more of a challenge.
The young Blues forward admitted that he feared Brown would be able to stop his goal-bound shot, with the 31-year-old making an excellent run to stop the ball. However, he did not get there in time and Sturridge scored on his first game of the season for
Chelsea, he revealed his happiness at having gotten his name on the score sheet.
Sturridge said while speaking to reporters:
“I was hoping he wouldn't get it and I was thinking, 'Oh God, he's got it'.
It was a huge moment for it to actually hit the back of the net because I thought he was going to clear it, so I am very happy.”
Sturridge revealed the inclusion of newcomer Raul Meireles in the squad had made a difference, with the 28-year-old Portuguese midfielder doing extremely well on his debut for his new side. Meireles signed from http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Liverpool-c39809 on the deadline day of the summer
transfer window.
He made his debut for the Blues against Sunderland on Saturday and was crucial in setting up the second goal, which proved to be the winner. Sturridge admitted it was the http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Portugal-c2984 international’s pass that had inspired his creative goal.
He continued:
“It was a great ball from http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Raul-Meireles-c30678, great vision from him. I got across the centre-half and saw the keeper coming out, so I went for a little cheeky one and it paid off.”
While the score line wasn’t as impressive as the London side had been against Sunderland, it seems http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Nicolas-Anelka-c27786 in attack ahead of Fernando
Torres was questioned.
The former http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/FC-Porto-c39186 manager did not talk too much about his decision to drop the misfiring Spaniard to the bench, claiming he had a talented group of strikers to choose from and had decided to go along with Anelka and Sturridge for the clash against the
Black Cats.
Villas-Boas revealed:
“I have four wonderful strikers and all of them compete highly for the forward positions.
All of them offer different kinds of things because they have different talents, and today the choice fell to Anelka.”
