Chelsea striker Fernando Torres talks about the Champions League, denies under pressure rumours
Chelsea striker http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Spain-c3011 striker arrived at Stamford Bridge during the January transfer window for a record breaking fee of £50 million claiming he wanted to play Champions League football, something Liverpool were unable to provide.
http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Liverpool-c39809 have been unable to qualify for the Champions League for two years now and have not been doing too great in the Europa League either. This was mainly why Torres decided on a move away from Anfield, to a club where he felt he had a chance to compete for silverware. Chelsea seemed like the perfect side, having won the double the previous season.
The Spaniard was confident about his side’s chances in the European competition but keeping the 2008 Champions League final against Manchester United in mind, admitted the match could go in either side’s favour. Torres said while speaking to reporters, “I think it depends on whether or not we get past Manchester United in the quarter-finals, which is 50-50.”
The 27-year-old revealed he was eager to play with his new side in the final of the Champions League and said he was hoping to face a Spanish side. He was referring to the La Liga giants, Real Madrid and Barcelona, both of whom have a chance of ending up in the final. He said, “I would love to play in the European Cup final, with Chelsea, against a Spanish side.”
Torres predicted Jose Mourinho’s Madrid would eventually get past Tottenham Hotspur, who were a somewhat surprising quarter-finalists this season. He admitted the Spurs had improved drastically to make it to this point of the competition but was certain the Spanish giants would emerge victors over the two legs. He continued, “Real Madrid are the favourites to win, although it is not going to be easy.”
Torres’ record breaking arrival was the most talked of during the winter transfer window and understandably overshadowed the arrival of Benfica defender http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/David-Luiz-c10542. However, since then Luiz has proved to be more successful for the Blues. Not only has the 23-year-old Brazilian defender been terrific overall, he has managed to score two goals, while Torres has not even managed one.
The Spaniard remained positive about his goal drought though and revealed he was confident he would soon find his debut goal. He denied that he was under pressure because of the fee http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Chelsea-c38786 paid for him and said he had the support of both Carlo Ancelotti and Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich. He added, “The fact that (Chelsea owner, Roman) Abramovich has paid that much money demonstrates that he wants the best team possible.”
