Chelsea transfer rumours: Scott Parker and http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Roger-Johnson-c31524 linked with the Blues
With recent reports suggesting the Chelsea midfielder http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Michael-Essien-c25294 could be sidelined for at least six months, the Blues have begun the search for a replacement. The 28-year-old Ghanaian midfielder sustained a knee injury during pre-season training and even though the full extent of the injury is not yet known, it is believed to be serious.
Following his injury, there have been two players who have been linked with a move to Stamford Bridge; West Ham United midfielder Scott Parker and Birmingham City defender Roger Johnson. The 30-year-old England international and the 28-year-old defender are looking for a move away, with their respective sides being relegated to the Championship last season.
A former Chelsea player, Parker moved to West Ham United from Newcastle United for a fee of £7 million in the summer of 2007. His first season for the Hammers was plagued by injury and he went on to make only 20 appearances in all competitions, scoring just one goal. The next few seasons saw him become more consistent and play a bigger role for the club.
In the 2010-2011 season, Parker made 40 appearances and scored 7 goals, a performance which earned him the Football Writers' Association Footballer of the Year award along with the Hammer of the Year award. While his efforts were recognized, they were not enough to save West Ham United from relegation.
With the Hammers having been relegated, Parker is reportedly looking for a move to an English Premier League side. He has been previously linked with other Premier League sides, such as http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Liverpool-c39809. The aforementioned sides are all looking for experienced midfielders in the summer transfer window, with the Blues recently joining their ranks after Essien’s injury.
Parker would be the ideal choice to replace the http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/England-c749 colleagues at Stamford Bridge.
Roger Johnson, the Birmingham City defender, is valued at an estimated £5-7 million with one year remaining on his current contract. The English defender signed with Birmingham City for a fee of £5 million from Cardiff City, after a highly successful season with the Championship side. He made 119 appearances in the Championship and scored 12 goals.
He had an equally good spell at Birmingham City, making 88 appearances in his two seasons with the club and scoring 3 goals. However, Johnson’s efforts were not enough to save the Carling Cup winners from relegation as they finished 18th on the English Premier League table. Having decided to move to a Premier League side, the defender has been linked to the Blues.
According to reports, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Chelsea-c38786 are Johnson’s dream club and there is no way the defender would turn down a move to Stamford Bridge if the Blues made an offer for him. With the new Chelsea manager Andre Villas-Boas looking for a back-up central defender, the 28-year-old defender could be the perfect addition to the Chelsea squad in the summer transfer window.
