The 22-year-old was left out of the England squad for the European Championships by new manager Roy Hodgson but is expected to be selected by Stuart Pearce. He will be amongst the 18 players selected for the Great Britain team chosen by Pearce.
Sturridge will be given his preferred role as a central striker, having previously also been used as a winger. The former Manchester City striker’s future at Stamford Bridge is currently uncertain and has been linked with a move away in the summer transfer window.
The English striker began his senior career with Manchester City in 2006, but was unlucky to sustain a hip injury early on which had him sidelined for the most part of 2007.Until the end of the 2008-2009 season, Sturridge had made 32 appearances in all competitions, with six goals and four assists.
The Manchester City Young Player of the 2008-2009 season did not sign a new contract with the Manchester side when his contract expired. Instead he signed a four year deal with the Blues in the summer of 2009 for an initial fee of 3.5 million pounds.
In his first season at Stamford Bridge, Sturridge mostly made substitute appearances for the Blues or featured for the reserve side. He scored five goals in 20 appearances in his debut season, going on to make 21 appearances in all competitions with four goals.
Things changed for Sturridge last season when he was given more of a chance to prove himself. Sturridge made 41 appearances in the 2011-2012 season and scored 13 goals along with seven assists.
