Chelsea’s Frank Lampard wary of Wayne Rooney threat in the UEFA Champions League
Chelsea midfielder http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Wayne-Rooney-c36736. Lampard believes that the United hitman will be out to prove a point after he was handed a two-match ban by the Football Association (FA).
Rooney has been banned for two Premier League games for his foul-mouthed celebration following his hat-trick against West Ham United over the weekend. However, that ban does not affect his participation in the Champions League.
Manchester United will travel to Stamford Bridge on Wednesday, 6th April, for the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final tie against Chelsea. Wayne Rooney will be playing in that match, and Blues midfielder Frank Lampard believes the
striker will have extra motivation to perform in the Champions League after his two-match Premier League ban.
Speaking on the impending clash between the two English giants, Lampard said, “Wayne is always a very competitive player and there is never a good time to be playing against him. But there's a chance that the ban might spur him on even more. When you get
negative headlines like he's had it can make you more of a threat.”
He added, "It's not for me to say if I was surprised by the charge. The FA have made their decision and I think United have accepted it.”
Chelsea manager Carlo Ancelotti was not as non-committal about the FA’s decision as Lampard was. The Blues boss has expressed his shock at the severity of the punishment, claiming that such things never happened during his time in the Serie A.
Ancelotti said, “Obviously the behaviour was not good - but in Italy nothing happens if a player shouts into a camera. Here, the FA are very strong and they have given a two-game ban - I am surprised by this.”
However, the former AC Milan boss was also vary of the threat posed by Rooney. Ancelotti said that the United striker scored against Chelsea in the last game between the sides, and was one of the players who could create problems for his team.
