Chelsea’s improved bid of £27 million for http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Luka-Modric-c22857 set to be rejected by Tottenham Hotspur
http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Daniel-c9879 Levy, to land the 25-year-old Croatian playmaker. The Blues made an improved bid of £27 million, after their initial bid of £22 million was rejected by the Spurs.
Modric had previously claimed he would not hand in a transfer request out of respect for the club and its supporters, but seems to have changed his mind after the recent meeting with Levy. According to the midfielder, the Spurs chairman threatened him with playing for the reserves for the rest of his time at White Hart Lane.
Modric is now convinced he has to leave Tottenham for Chelsea in the summer transfer window, and has once again expressed his desire to make the move to Stamford Bridge. That led to the £5 million increase in Chelsea’s initial bid for the Spurs midfielder, which could go up to £35 million.
Especially with recent reports claiming that Tottenham Hotspur will most likely reject the recent bid by their London rivals. Tottenham Hotspur manager Harry Redknapp revealed that while he was not keen on letting Modric go, the decision lay with Levy.
The reason why Spurs management is not willing to let Modric go is because they are convinced his departure will cause other players to also demand an exit. He stands the risk of losing the likes of youngster http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Gareth-Bale-c14422 if Modric leaves White Hart Lane anytime soon.
Modric looks to make £120,000-a-week at Chelsea, a huge improvement from the £50,000-a-week he currently makes at White Hart Lane. It is not only the increase in wages that has tempted the http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Croatia-c2879 international, it is the prospect of playing for a big club.
While Spurs managed to qualify for the UEFA Champions League last season, they failed to retain their place in the European competition with a fifth place finish in the English Premier League. They have however, beaten http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Liverpool-c39809 to a Europa League place, the second tier European competition.
One cannot possibly blame and punish Modric for wanting to play Champions League football with a bigger club. Something the club had agreed to do when he had signed with them from Dynamo Zagreb in the 2008-2009 season.
According to the in-demand midfielder, he had a gentleman’s agreement with Daniel Levy according to which the club would entertain offers from bigger clubs if they came calling. Something Levy flat out denied.
Modric signed a contract extension with Tottenham in 2010, a deal that will keep him at the club until the end of 2016 season. However, it is expected that with a further improved bid of £35 million will convince the Spurs to part ways with the Croatian playmaker.
At this point Chelsea will be willing to spend as much as they have to in order to guarantee the services of Modric, having been told that Ghanaian midfielder http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Michael-Essien-c25294 will be out for six months. The 28-year-old sustained a knee injury in pre-season training and will now be sidelined for the beginning of the season.
The Blues are undoubtedly short on midfielders, with most of their existing midfielders either injured or above the age of thirty. They need some reinforcements in that particular area if they wish to return to winning ways in the upcoming season.
