Ok, so I have to do a summer assignment for chemistry and I'm sort of stuck I get it but not really...so the question is..Describe and explain the periodic trends in atomic radii, ionic radii, first ionization energies, electronegativities and melting points for the alkali metals(Li -->Cs), halogens(F --> I) ..Thank you to any help anyone is willing to give!!

  1. "periodic trends" means that they might increase going across and decrease going down...i can't remember the specifics for all of them, you'll need to use your book/look them up. but you'll have answers like:

atomic radii increases going across the table, and decreases going down.

idk if that's right, just an example of what you're looking for.

  2. http://campus.ru.ac.za/full_images/img05...

This pictures shows the periodic trends. Hope it helps.

  3. hmm, interesting question...

  4. 1. atomic radius

Basically, the distance from nucleus to the outermost electron..so the size of the element.

Atomic radius decreases as you go up the periodic table, and decreases as you go to the right.  So the largest atomic radius would be the element FRANCIUM.

    2. ionic radii

Cations (positive ions) are always smaller than their parent atoms and anions (negative ions) are always larger.

    3. first ionization energies

This is the minimum energy required to remove one electron from each atom.  There will be an increase of ionization energy from left to right of a given period and a decrease from top to bottom.

    4. electro negativity

Electronegativity is a measure of the ability of an atom or molecule to attract electrons in the context of a chemical bond.  electronegativity decreases as you go across a period (row), and as you go down a group (column).

    melting point (alkali metals)

as you go down from Li to Cs, melting point decreases

    melting point (halogens)

as you go down from F to I, melting point increases.
