ammonium nitrate is a fertilizer and can also be used as an explosive. when heated, it explodes by this reaction:

2 NH4 NO3 ---------- 2 N2 + 4 H2O + O2

if all the products are gases how many liters of gaseous products at 770○C and 1 atm of pressure are produced by the explosion ok 100 kg of ammonium nitrate????

2) the main engines on the space shuttle rocket use the following reaction:

2 H2 + O2 ------------- 2 H2O

assuming that H2 and O2 diffuse into the reaction chamber through identical holes, what must the ratio of hydrogen holes to oxygen holes to be maintain a 2:1 hydrogen-to-oxygen ratio???

solve with solution,.,tnx

  1. 1,  Find the moles of NH4NO3 in 100 kg (10^5 grams).

    2.  Since 2 moles of NH4NO3 produces 8 moles of gases,

find the number of moles of gas that are created from

          100 kg.

    3.  Use ideal gas law to find volume (you have n,P and T).

    1.  By Graham's law, H2 will diffuse 4 times the rate of O2

(rate is inversely proportional to sqrt(mole wt).

2  So if you as many H2 holes as O2 holes, you would have

         4x the hydrogen as oxygen.

3  So find the ration for 2x hydrogen to oxygen.
