  1. you treat the numerator and the denominator individually

    m/s x 1km / 1000 m =  km / s

    km / s  / 3600s / 1hr = km / hr

  2. Perhaps the easiest way to explain convsersions like these is with examples.

    Convert 10.0 m/s to km/hr and to km/day, and to miles/hr.

    Conversion factors:

    1 km = 1000 m

    1 hr = 60 min

    1 min = 60 s

    24 hr = 1 day

    1 mile = 1.609 km

To convert to km/hr, convert m to km and s to hr.

    10.0 m/s x (1 km / 1000 m) x (60 s / 1 min) x (60 min / 1 hr) = 36 km/hr

To convert to km/day, just convert hr to days.

    36 km/hr x (24 hr / 1 day) = 864 km/day

To convert to miles/hr, convert km to miles.

    36 km/hr x (1 mile / 1.609 km) = 22.4 miles/hr.

Someone who runs 10.0 m/s runs 100 m in 10 s. In the olympics, the winning time was under 10 s. This is faster than 22.4 miles/hr!
