You wash dishes for a chemistry laboratory to make extra money for laundry. You earn 6 dollars/hour , and each shift lasts 75 minutes . Your laundry requires 6 quarters/load .

Part A

How many shifts must you work if you wish to wash 10 loads of laundry?

Part B

How many loads of laundry will each shift pay for if the cost per load rises to 8 quarters?

I can't figure this out! please help! thanks!

  1. A.  need $15.00, so work 2.5 hours, that is 150 minutes, so you need to work 2 shifts

    B.  one shift is 1.25 hour, that wold be $7.50.  each load now requires $2, so one shift will pay for 3 loads (3 loads with 1.50 left)

  2. Part A:

10 loads of laundry is going to be equal to 60 quarters...

and 6 quarters is equal to $1.50.

Therefore every 75 minutes or 1 hour and 15 minutes your 24 quarters..

That should help you solve Part A..

  3. One reason this can be confusing is because they are talking in terms of "quarters" instead of dollars.  so the foirst thing you have to realize is that you need to THINK and do your working out in terms of "quarters" not dollars

    You earn $6 per hour

or 24 quarters per hour (6*4)

You work for 1.25 hours per shift (75/60 = 1.25hrs)

    .. so per SHIFT you make 1.25 * 24 = 30quarters

You make 30 quarters per shift that you work.

part A: ten loads of laundry cost 60 quarters (10*6)

if you make 30 quarters in one shift and need 60 quarters you will need to work (60/30) = 2 shifts

    A: ans=2 shifts

    part b:

Lets re-write what thgey are syaing to better understand it:

-if it costs 8 quarts per laundry load and you make 30 quarters per shift

-how many loads can you do with 30 quarters when it costs 8 quarters each load

so all we have to do for this one is say 30 quarters divided by 8 quarters per load equals the number of loads you can do

    30 / 8 = 3.75

as you cant do "three quarters of a load" the answer if three

    B: ans = 3 loads
