According to the official rules of baseball, a baseball must have a circumference not more than 9.25 in. or less than 9.00 in. and a mass no more than 5.25 oz and no less than 5.00 oz. What range of densities can a baseball be expected to have? Express this range as a single # w/ an accompanying uncertainty limit.

  1. the most dense would have  9.00  inch  circumference & a mass of 5.25 oz.

    9.00 inch  circumference gives :

    radius of   1.4324 inches, which gives :

    a volume of   12.311 cubic inches

    which gives a density of:

    5.25 oz / 12.311 cu in = 0.426 oz. / cu in

    ======================================...

    the least dense would have  9.25  inch  circumference & a mass of 5.00 oz.

    9.25 inch  circumference gives :

    radius of    1.4722 inches, which gives :

    a volume of  13.365 cubic inches

    which gives a density of:

    5.00 oz /  13.365 cu in = 0.374 oz. / cu in

    ======================

    0.374  to 0.426 oz. / cu in averages 0.400  with a spread of 0.052

    your answer is 0.400 oz / cu in +/- 0.026
