Question:

Chemistry Question! (summer homework) Physical vs. Chemical Changes?

So I'm pretty sure I've got this figured out, but I want some second opinions, please. If you can include your reasoning I'd appreciate it:

For each process described below, state whether the material being discussed is most likely a mixture or a compound, and state whether the process is a chemical change or a physical change.

a. An orange liquid is distilled, resulting in the collection of a yellow liquid and a red solid.

b. A colorless, crystalline solid is decomposed, yielding a pale yellow-green gas and a soft, shiny metal.

c. A cup of tea becomes sweeter as sugar is added to it.

Thanks! I know this seems like it should be easy, and I'm 99.9% sure I've got "a." and "b." correct, but the tea thing I keep second guessing myself.

  1. a) The orange liquid is likely a mixture and distilling off the yellow liquid is a physical change.

    b) The colorless, crystalline solid is likely NaCl or some similar salt. Decomposing it with an electric current would yield Na, a soft silvery metal, and Cl2, a greenish gas. This is a chemical change.

    c) Adding the sugar is a physical change. If you let the water evaporate, you will get the sugar back, though it will contain tea extracts.
