Chemistry help......... It's about Helium?

Why is Helium in 18th group instead of 2nd group?

I'm talking about finding out the group with the help of electronic configuration.

Helium = 1s

1s = 2 valence electrons = 2nd group

then why is it in 18th group?

I know that it is an inert gas.

  1. Do you mean the 8th Group? Because Helium is found in Group VIII i.e. The Noble Gases.

    Well Helium is in Group VIII because like the rest of the gases found in that group is is very non-reactive (can be called an inert gas) due to having a full outer shell. Though Helium only has 2 valence electrons unlike the other Noble gases that have eight, Helium's chemical properties i.e. It doesn't readily react make it more suited to Group VIII than Group II where the elements form ions and are notably more reactive. An element's group reflects its chemical properties and thus helium is more suited to Group VIII.

  2. helium is surly 1s . but it is noble gas first find out the terms of noble gases and than compare it to helium . so it is in 8th group not in 2nd group.

  3. Helium is in the 8th group along with the other inert elements because it does not react with other chemicals; its electron shells are completely filled.
