Nitrogen Monoxide and Oxygen react to produce nitrogen dioxide according to the equation : 2NO + O2 ---> 2NO2

40cm^3 of nitrogen monoxide reacted with an excess of oxygen. What volume of nitrogen dioxide is produced? (all measurements made at r.t.p)

  1. 2 moles of NO react with 1 mole of O2 to produce 2 moles of NO2. They are related in a 1:1 ratio.

    40 CC of NO = 40 mL = 0.04 liters  since it is at standard conditions 0.04 liters /22.4 liters /mole = 0.0018 moles  of NO

    since it is at standard conditions then there is a 1:1 relationship so the reaction will yield 0.0018 moles of NO2 which will occupy the same volume as the = 40 mL.
