An atom of 179Ta has a mass of 178.945930 amu. Calculate the binding energy per MOLE in kJ. Use the values:

mass of 1H atom = 1.007825 amu

mass of a neutron = 1.008665 amu

c = 2.99792 x 10^8 m/s

Give your answer to 3 significant figures and USE E notation.

    Eb = binding energy, in MeV

    Z = number of protons

    m H = mass of a hydrogen atom (1.007825amu)

    N = number of neutrons

    m n = mass of a neutron (1.008665 amu)

    m isotope = actual mass of the isotope

    931.5 Mev/amu = the conversion factor to convert mass into energy, in units of MeV

    Eb= [(Z × m H ) + (N × m n) - (m isotope)](931.5 MeV/amu)

    =[(73 x  1.007825 amu) + (106 x  1.008665 amu) - (m 179)](931.5)

    = [73.571225 + 106.91849  - 178.945930] (931.5 Mev/amu)

    = (1.543785)(931.5 Mev / amu)

    = 1438 Mev per atom

    @ 6.022e23 atoms per mole = 8.65985e26  Mev per mole

    @ 1 megaelectronvolt = 1.6021773e-16 kilojoule

    1.39 e11 kilojoule per mole
