I was wondering if someone could explain to me why certain depression medications have the side affects of weight gain, and sexual side affects?? Every pill I have been on has had either or. What causes side affects???? Is it a chemical??? Help me understand!! Thank you. (((Not a homework question, I'm 28 and just curious)))). :)

  1. The quick answer is that medications that affect serotonin levels, such as increasing the levels at nerve receptors, seem to cause weight gain and also sexual dysfunction. As to the exact mechanism, I'm not sure.


  2. Sexual side effects include decreased desire , erectile dysfunction, delayed ejaculation and decreased o****m. These can last throughout treatment. Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors  are more likely to cause sexual side effects, particularly delayed o****m or inability to achieve o****m . Tricyclic antidepressants are more likely to cause erectile dysfunction.
