A spoon with an area of 4.00 cm² is plated with silver from an Ag(CN)2^- solution, using a current of .500 A for 2 hours. What is the thickness of the silver plate (d Ag=10.5 g/cm^3)??

Thanks for your help!

  1. 0.500 amps[(2 hr)(60min/hr)(60sec/min)] = 3600 amp-seconds

    3600 amp-sec @ 1 mole of electrons / 96500 amp-sec= 0.0373 moles of electrons

    since1 Ag+  & 1 mole e- -->1 Ag, 0.0373 mol electrons produced 0.0373 moles of silver

    using molar mass:

    0.0373 moles of silver @ 107.86g /mole = 4.024 grams of Ag

    using density to het volume:

    4.024 g Ag @ 10.5g / cc = 0.383cc's

    dividing by surface area to get thickness:

    0.383cc's / 4.00cm2 = 0.0958 cm thick

    your answer is : 0.0958cm thick
