Electrolysis of a molten metal chloride (MCl3) using a current of 6.50 A for 1397 seconds deposits 1.41 g of the metal at the cathode. What is the metal?

  1. MCl3  +  3e-  --->   M(s) + 3Cl-

    i*t = 6.50A * 1397s = 9080.5C

    9080.5C / 96485C/mol = 9.41*10^-2mol of e-

    3 : 1 = 9.41*10^-2 : x

    x = 9.41*10^-2 * 1 / 3 = 3.14*10^-2 mol of M

    1.41g / 3.14*10^-2mol = MM = 45g/mol

    then M = Sc
