1. What does a pH of a solution tell you?

2. What is neutralization?

3. Write an equation for the neutralization of H2SO4 by KOH.

4. What is the function of an indicator in a titration?

5. The label on a shampoo claims that the pH is balanced. What do you think “pH balance” means?

6. A solution has a [OH-] = 1 x 10-5 M. What are the [H3O ] and the pH of the solution?

7. A sample of 0.0020 mole of HCl is dissolved in water to make a 2000-mL solution. Calculate the molarity of the HCl solution, the [H3O ], and the pH. For a strong acid such as HCl, the [H3O ] is the same as the molarity of the HCl solution. HCl H2O -------> H3O Cl

  1. Too many question.

    1.  Its the amount of H+ ion in solution, or acidity/alkalinity.

    2.  Neutralization means balancing the H+ ions and the OH- ions in the solution, or making the solution pH neutral.  Not acidic or basic.

    3.  H2SO4 + 2KOH ---> 2 H2O + K2SO4

    4. An indicator such as phenolphthalein shows color when a certain pH is reached.  Indicators turn a cool color such as magenta when the pH hits a particular value.  Phenolphthalein turns fuchsia color when pH of 8.3 and clear when less than 8.3.  Indicators "indicate" the pH, usually involving a titration with an acid or base.

    5. pH balanced means neither basic or acidic.  Neutral.  And usually "buffered" at a neutral pH which mean resistant to changes in pH.

    6. & 7.  Not in the mood to work it out for you.
