The electrolysis of an aqueous solution of NaCl has the overall reaction:

2H2O +2Cl^- ----> H2+Cl2+2OH^-

During the electrolysis, 2.6 x 10^22 electrons pass through the cell. What is teh mass of the Cl2 produced?

Thanks!

  1. using avagadro's number:

    2.6 x 10^22 electrons @ 6.022 e23 items / mole = 0.0432moles of electrons

    since: 2 Cl- -->  Cl2 & 2 mol electrons,

    0.0432 mol e- @ 1 mol Cl2 / 2 mol e- 0.0216 moles of Cl2 are produced

    using molar mass of chlorine:

    0.0216 moles Cl2 @ 70.9 g/mole = 1.53 grams of chlorine are produced

    your answer is(2 sig figs) : 1.5 grams of Cl2
