Chen Jin overwhelms Tommy Sugiarto in the Men’s Singles round-of-16 at the Thailand Open GP Gold
China’s Chen Jin has defeated Indonesia’s Tommy Sugiarto in the Men’s Singles round-of-16 in the Thailand Open GP Gold 2011, at Bangkok. The encounter was held on Thursday, June 9.
The ruling World Champion, Chen Jin, who is currently the World Number Eleven and fourth seed in the tournament, took 61 minutes to oust Tommy in a rubber-set match.
In the quarter-final of the event, the Chinese will fight against Malaysian veteran, Wong Choong Han, who thrashed Suppanyu Avihingsanon of Thailand in the pre-quarterfinal of the event. 
Tommy surprised everyone present in the hall by playing terrific badminton, as he dominated the game in the first set. He kept his opponent moving in all corners of the court. Chen could not match the perfection of the Indonesian, who was playing a flawless
game. The fourth seed lost the first game in just 20 minutes with a surprising difference of 13-21.
In the second set of the match, the Chinese took a prompt revenge of his loss in the opening set, as he became aggressive and played powerful pushes along with hard to return smashes. The Indonesian was miles behind the Chinese shuttler in this set. He completely
failed to find the gaps in his opponent’s court. Chen finished the game in a one-sided manner, with a clear margin of 21-11, in 18 minutes.  
In the deciding game of this terrific fight, both players were tied until 3-3, when Chen accelerated his speed and put more power in his strokes to quickly lift the score to 10-5. Tommy kept his momentum going by playing better at this stage.
The Indonesian drew near at 10-12 by employing his superb defensive strokes, coupled with powerful smashes. However, Chen adopted a new strategy, as he began to hit powerful smashes from the rear court.
Tommy failed to stop the aggressive run of his rival and Chen clinched the final set by a 21-14 margin, in 23 minutes. The finishing score of this 61-minute entertaining fight was 13-21, 21-11 and 21-14.
