Chen Jin survives against spirited Marc Zwiebler in Men’s Singles round-of-16 at London Olympics
China’s former World Champion remained lucky as he narrowly survived in Men’s Singles round-of-16 when he won against the spirited Marc Zwiebler of Germany at the London Olympics 2012 at Wembley Arena, in London, on Wednesday, August 1.
The World Number Four Jin, who is fourth seeded shuttler in Men’s Singles category at Olympics, had to dig into his arsenal to overpower Zwiebler who remained unlucky as he suffered with an ankle injury and lost the battle in a respectable manner.
The higher ranked Jin was heavy favourite to win this battle but his loss in the first game brought doubts about his victory. However, he was lucky as his rival got an ankle injury and could not play well in following games giving Jin a chance to win the
battle in rubber sets.
On the other hand, the World Number 18 Zwiebler showed a great temperament and determination on court as he took the first game and continued playing till the end despite having his ankle injured. He lost the battle in three games with a reasonable margin.
In the first game, it was the lower ranked German shuttler who stunned the huge crowd at Wembley Arena by playing tremendous badminton and kept his Chinese opponent under pressure.
Until the mid-game interval, the fourth seeded Jin remained struggling on court and failed to manage a good lead.
After the break, the Chinese shuttler tried his best to play positive and aggressive badminton but failed to stop the progress of Zwiebler and lost the first game with a 19-21 score on the board.
In the following set, Zwiebler failed to maintain his rhythm as his injury started to trouble him and he became slow which helped Jin to make the score levelled by taking the second game with a margin of 21-12.
In the decider, Zwiebler completely failed to take the bird early but did not give up and continued fighting till the end.
On the other hand, Jin took benefit of his rival’s injury and played longer drives which assisted him to end up the final set with a comfortable 21-9 score on the board.
The higher ranked Jin defeated Zwiebler in an entertaining three-set contest with a thrilling margin of 19-21, 21-12 and 21-9.
