Chen Jin trounces Lee Hyun Il in Men’s Singles quarter-final of the Singapore Open Super Series
China’s Chen Jin annihilated Korea’s Lee Hyun Il, in the Men’s Singles quarter-final battle of the 2011 Singapore Open Super Series, in Singapore City. The match was contested on Friday, June 17.
The World Number Nine, Chen, took only two sets to beat Lee Hyun, who is currently placed at the number 13 spot, in the badminton world rankings.
It was one of the best fights of the day, as two giants of badminton were contesting for a berth in the semi-final of the event. The score line in the opening half of the set also suggested a close encounter between the two elite shuttlers in the first-half.
The score progressed without any difference and reached 12-12, where the Chinese played some fascinating strokes and earned a good lead of 18-12.
Lee Hyun tried to stop the aggressive run of the Chinese but failed to produce better strokes in the ending part of the opening set, as he threw out some out of angle smashes. Chen clinched the first game by a big margin of 21-14, in 22 minutes.
In the second set, Lee Hyun started the game with an aggressive approach and scored two successive points. However, the Chinese was also playing at the same speed and tied the score by reaching at 3-3. Chen then started to gear up his game by dictating the
pace of the rallies.
Chen’s control on the net and smashes from the rear court put Lee Hyun in a defensive position. At the end of the half, the Chinese was leading the game by a commanding margin of 11-5.
Chen stretched the difference by maintaining pressure on his opponent, who defeated the Chinese in last week’s Thailand Open Grand Prix Gold 2011. However, Chen was alert this time and spared no chance for the Korean to dominate the match at any stage.
The Chinese made a superb run and reached at a comfortable position of 19-7. His remarkable game destroyed Lee Hyun, who was quite slow in the second game allowing the Chinese to win the set by a 21-9 margin, in 23 minutes. The two-set match ended in 45
minutes with a 21-14 and 21-9 margin.
In the semi-final, Chen will take on compatriot, Wang Zhengming, who defeated Viktor Axelsen of Denmark, in the quarter-final of the championship.
