Chen Long overpowers Wong Wing Ki in Men’s Singles round-of-16 at London Olympics
China’s young and talented player Chen Long showed a dominating performance in Men’s Singles round-of-16 battle when he overpowered Hong Kong’s Wong Wing Ki at the 2012 London Olympics at Wembley Arena, London, on Wednesday, August 1.
The World Number Three Long, who is number three seed in Men’s Singles draw at Olympic Games, played composed badminton and managed to beat the 16th seeded Wing Ki with a decent margin on the board.
The third seeded Chinese shuttler played to his maximum potential while remaining focused on the court throughout the contest and ousted his Hong Kong rival by ending up the battle in straight games with a convincing score.
In the meanwhile, the World Number 23 Wing Ki also played good badminton in opening parts of both games but could not dictate the pace of rallies in the concluding phases and lost to his higher ranked Chinese opponent in straight games without proving his
mettle.
Long was in good form from the opening points but he failed to take a considerable lead in the opening half as the lower ranked Hong Kong shuttler also displayed a gutsy performance.
Until the one-minute interval, both shuttlers were progressing with an equal pace on the board.
After the mid-game break, it was the Chinese shuttler who unleashed his powerful smashes by taking the bird early from rear-court area.
The impressive net play and powerful down the line smashes helped Long to set up a good lead against his opponent.
The in-form Long remained on track at the concluding half of opening game and easily ended it up with a 21-17 margin on the board.
In the second game, Wing Ki again played impressive badminton while remaining close to his Chinese challenger. He did not let Long to take a clear lead until the mid-game interval.
Nevertheless, the Chinese shuttler played with precision in the concluding half and took over the control by gearing up his speed.
The spirited Long played with impressive aggression in the ending points and took the set with a reasonable margin of 21-17.
Long emerged as victorious against Wing Ki in Men’s Singles pre-quarter-final battle with a decent score of 21-17 and 21-17.
In the Men’s Singles quarter-final, the Chinese shuttler will take on World Number 5 Danish shuttler Peter Hoeg Gade who ousted Korea’s Son Wan Ho in the other round-of-16 match.
