Chen Ruolin captures Women’s 10m Platform gold medal: Day two – 18th FINA Diving World Cup
China’s Chen Ruolin dictated terms to her competitors by capturing gold medal of the Women’s 10m Platform on second day of the 18th Federation Internationale de Natation (FINA) Visa Diving World Cup 2012 at the Olympic Aquatics Centre, London
on Tuesday, February 21.
The 19-year-old Ruolin made no mistake in the playoff of 10m event and occupied the podium for gold medal. She is the double Olympic champion of 10m individual and 10m Synchronised event at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
She also defended her 10m Synchronised title at the 2009 Rome World Championships while accomplished a silver medal in the 10m individual discipline at the same championships. With her scintillating efforts at the 2011 World Championships, Ruolin once again
pocketed gold medals of both disciplines at the 2011 world titles in Shanghai.
The Chinese 10m diving specialist was the arena’s favourite for the title of the event as she comfortably overpowered her rivals in the initial two rounds of the event.
Ruolin’s performance had deteriorated in the semi-final, but the teenager demonstrated her phenomenal skills in the playoff and accomplished gold medal of the event with an effort of 405.25 points.
She confronted strong competition from her teammate, Hu Yadan, who struggled hard to overwhelm Ruolin in the final round but suffered a deficit of 8.15 points. Yadan remained marginally behind the gold medallist and settled on the medal rostrum for silver
medal by achieving a wonderful score of 397.10 points.
The silver medallist enjoyed an advantage of almost 47 points over her strongest competitor, Yulia Koltunova of Russia, who ended third by notching 350.25 points.
Other prominent efforts of the event included fascinating struggles of Canada’s Roseline Filion and Mexico’s Carolina Mendoza. Roseline earned fourth best spot of the event as she gained 348.90 points. She was followed by Mendoza, who was nearly two points
away from overwhelming the effort of her preceding finisher and ended fifth with an effort of 346.85 points.
In addition, the session ended after the completion of all scheduled events while the winners were awarded medals for their impressive efforts at the medal ceremony of the championship.
