Chen Siming wins women's snooker gold
Teenage cue artist Chen Siming contributed to China's bountiful medal harvest in the 2010 Guangzhou Asian Games on Tuesday.
The 16-year-old won the women's 6-red snooker singles gold at the Asian Games Town Gymnasium. She blanked Chinese Taipei's Lai h*i-shan 4-0 in the final.
Chen defeated India's Vidya Viswanathan Pillai 4-1 in the last 16 before beating Chinese Taipei's Chan Ya-ting on a similar score in the quarterfinals.
She then edged Hong Kong's Ng On Yee 4-3 to arrange a final date with Lai, who downed China's Bi Zhuging 4-0 in the other semi-final.
It was Chen's second medal of the Games after earlier winning a silver in the team event.
Japan assured itself of a gold medal in the men's carom three-cushion after Joji Kai and Tsuyoshi Suzuki defeated their respective Vietnamese opponents in the semi-finals. Kai downed Duong Anh Vu 40-29 while Suzuki prevailed over Ly The Vinh 40-36.
Meanwhile, the preliminary round of the men's 9-ball pool singles kicked off today.
Filipino players Dennis Orcollo and Warren Kiamco were among the early winners. Former world No 1 Orcollo crushed Odkhuu Purevsuren of Mongolia 9-2, while veteran Kiamco ousted Surathep Phoochalam of Thailand 9-5.
Orcollo will next face Japan's Masaaki Tanaka, who won via walkover over Brunei Prince Muhtadee Billah.
Kiamco will next play Hong Kong's Lee Chen Man, who eliminated Qatar's Bashar Hussain Abdulmajeed 9-2.
Also through to the next phase were Chinese Taipei bets Ko Pin-yi and Chang Jung Lin. Ko beat Singapore's Peter Gilchrist 9-3 while Chang disposed of Lebanon's Mohamed Ali Berjaoui 9-5.
Abdullah Faa Alyousef of Kuwait defeated Bahauddin Faqiri of Afghanistan 9-5; China's Dang Jinhu beat Vietnam's Luong Chi Dung 9-4; former Southeast Asian Games champion Ricky Yang of Indonesia crushed Fahim Sinha of Bangladesh 9-4 while Hisataka Kamihashi
survived Malaysian Lee Poh Soon 9-7.
In other results: Mohammed Hasan A Baabad of Saudi Arabia slipped past Lee Kang of South Korea 9-8; Jeong Young-hwa of South Korea beat Chang Jung-lin of Chinese Taipei 9-7; Nitiwat Kanjanasri of Thailand whipped Firas Alshamini of Iraq 9-2; Fu Jianbo of
China trounced Kwok Chi Ho of Hong Kong 9-3.
Meanwhile, the last 16 of the women's 8-ball event will be held tomorrow.
Chang Shu-han of Chinese Taipei will play Iris Ranola of the Philippines; Chonticha Chitchomnart of Thailand will battle Cha You-ram of South Korea; Hoe Shu Wah of Singapore will lock horns with Liu Shasha of China; while another Chinese Fu Xiaofang will
take on Japan's Akimi Kajitani.
The lower half of the draw will feature Chou Chieh Yu of Chinese Taipei against Neela Ahmed of Maldives; Rubilen Amit of the Philippines versus Kim Ga-young of South Korea; Esther Kwan of Malaysia against Charlene Chai of Singapore; and Indira Gowda of India
against Duong Thuy Vi of Vietnam.
The women's 8-ball quarterfinals will be held later in the day.
