Chennai Super Kings v Sydney Sixers – Champions League Twenty20, 2012 (Group B) – Match Recap
A fluent all-round performance from http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Moises-Henriques-c2021 saw the Sydney Sixers claiming a 14-run win over the Chennai Super Kings, during their first match of the Champions League Twenty20, 2012, played at the New Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg on October
14.
The Super Kings won the toss, and skipper Dhoni decided to bowl first, claiming he did not fancy his side’s chances of defending a total on that particular surface.
The Sixers opened their innings with http://www.senore.com/Cricket/RA-Jadeja-c2238 in the 7th
over, and after a 28-run stand with http://www.senore.com/Cricket/BW-Hilfenhaus-c1204 in the 9th over.
Maddinson and skipper http://www.senore.com/Cricket/R-Ashwin-c2228, the Super Kings’ highest wicket-taker
to date, sending both batsmen back to the pavilion.
The Sixers looked in danger of posting a low total which would prove difficult to defend – however, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/SPD-Smith-c2555 (26) and Henriques (who top-scored for the side with an unbeaten 49*) managed to save the innings, setting up a 75-run stand for the 5th
wicket, which came to an end only on the final ball of the last over, with Smith’s dismissal at the hands of Hilfenhaus. By the end of 20 overs, the Sixers posted a competitive final total of 185.
Having chipped in with significant contributions with the bat, Henriques (3-0-23-3) now proceeded to lead the team’s bowling attack, and aided by http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Mitchell-Aaron-Starc-c76392 (4-0-31-3), ensured that none of the opposition’s batsmen were able to apply themselves at the
crease, with the Super Kings eventually cut off at 171.
While opener http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Faf-du-Plessis-c1427 (43) joined forces for a 61-run second-wicket stand. Their partnership, however, did not proceed beyond the 8th over –
du Plessis and Hussey were both dismissed in successive overs, with the former sent packing by http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Harold-William-Stephenson-c61707 O'Keefe in the 9th over.
The responsibility fell on the middle order to initiate a comeback, and http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Subramaniam-Badrinath-c91587 (6).
However, Player of the Match Henriques ensured that the middle order posed no threat to the Sixers – he sent Badrinath back to the pavilion in the 15th over, and followed it up by dismissing both Raina, and skipper Dhoni (8), in the 17th
over, leaving the Super Kings at 141 for 6.
The remainder of the batting order was easily disposed of, with http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Yo-Mahesh-c2816 (2) in the final over, leaving Hilfenhaus (7*) the lone man standing at the crease. The
Super Kings were eventually restricted to 171 by the end of 20 overs, and the Sixers went on to claim a 14-run victory.
