Chennai annihilate Wyamba in Champions League
The Champions’ League cricket tournament rolls on in http://www.senore.com/Cricket/South-Africa-c757 as top club teams from around the world battle it out for supremacy in the instant format of cricket, the T20 juggernaut.
The Sri Lankan outfit competing in the event continues to suffer as they crash to a humiliating 97 run defeat at the hands of the reigning champions of the Indian Premier League, Mahindra Singh Dhoni’s, Chennai Super Kings.
CKS made light work of the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Central-Districts-c777 in their opening match of the competition entered the match against Wyamba all guns blazing. They produced a stunning all-round performance that puts them as serious contenders for the multimillion dollar league
being contested by teams from six Test playing nations.
It was a Suresh Raina show at the Super sport park in Centurion as CSK batted first. Matthew Hayden and the star of the last edition of IPL, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Murali-Vijay-c78035, opened the innings and added 43 runs in little over five overs before the former Australian run machine
fell to Mendis for 10 runs.
His departure opened the floodgates for CSK as the second wicket partnership between Vijay and Raina yielded a staggering 137 runs in 12 overs. They scored at more than 10 runs per over as the hapless Lankans wondered what had struck them.
The right hander Vijay fell for 68 runs that came off 46 balls and included 9 fours and one 6, he was caught by Perera off Sri Lankan Test fast bowler Welegedera in the 18th over of the innings.
Just before his departure the scintillating assault by Raina had ended with the south paw smacking 87 runs off 44 balls only, his brutal assault included six fours and six sixes.
The two batsmen pulverised the opponents ensuring that their team posted a huge total that was set to test the inexperienced Sri Lankans.
CSK ended at an even 200 from the allotted 20 overs, almost all the Wyamba bowlers went for runs with Mendis and Welegedera the two most experienced conceding 45 and 47 runs respectively albeit they shared the three wickets to fall.
The Wyamba batsmen were then sent packing one after another in one of the most listless chases in the short history of the competition. At the completion of the sixth over of the innings, the top six batsmen had left for the hutch with the score board reading
an abysmal 35/6.
Even the dependable former Sri Lankan captain, Mahela Jayawardene, failed to inspire his team falling for a mere 10 runs. Karunanayke was the top scorer with 25 runs as the Sri Lankans limped past the 100 run mark to avoid more humiliation.
He got some support through Udana and Mendis, who scored 13 and 15 runs respectively. However, Wyamba folded for 103 runs in the 18th over handing a crushing 97 runs win to CSK.
Ashwin and Morkel did the damage for CSK, with Ashwin snapping four scalps, whilst the South African pace man Morkel claimed three wickets.
Suresh Raina was named man of the match for his special batting effort.
After the match a beaming Dhoni saluted his troops for their impressive show.
"Well of course, difficult ground to defend, so we needed over 180 at least and we managed that. Well of course, it is important to have a quick bowler [like Bollinger]. His pace really matters and he sets the pace. Albie Morkel's spell was equally important;
he has the knack of taking wickets. We have to win each and every game, we have to prepare well and execute plans”.
