Sequoyah was a half-Cherokee who invented the Cherokee system of writing for their spoken language in 1821.

John Ross was the principal chief of the Cherokee from 1828 to 1866. He also was half Cherokee. He resisted pressure from federal and state governments to move the Cherokee from their ancestrial lands in the
