Cherry Hills East beaten by Southern Regional 2-0 for South Jersey title – High School Volleyaball
Cherry Hills East high school boys volleyball team lost to Southern Regional High School in the final of the South Sectional New Jersey title on Friday, June 3rd.
The Rams won the championship match by a clean sweep of their opponents, 2-0. The game was pretty much a one sided affair as Cherry Hills could not put up a respectable score in any one of the sets. By the time the match ended, the final set scores stood at 25-16 and 25-18.
After his team had won the South sectional title for the second time, coach Eric Maxwell commented on the Rams performance and said, "Last year was the first one and we felt that we had to win it because we felt that we were the best team in South Jersey for a of couple years. And now that they are going to have an actual South Jersey champion, we have to win it. We continued to feel that way this year. We felt it was ours to lose. We thought it needed to stay here."
The Rams will be entering the state semi-finals after having won a total of 31 matches this season while suffering an impressively low number of seven defeats.
Capitalising on the momentum built by winning the opening set of the match, the Rams were able to take the lead early on in the second set of the game at 6-1. Despite being at a deficit, East did not give up and restricted the Rams from going much further while closing in the gap at 12-10. But before East could push past ahead and grab a chance at making the match a tie, the Rams went on a 4-0 run to extend their advantage. East could not stop the Rams from maintaining an advantage at 20-14. After that point, it was a fairly easy job for North to seal the deal at 25-18.
The key ingredient that got the Rams there win was team coordination. Both the attack and the defense of the Rams was working in sync to keep East under pressure all through the match. Despite that fact, some Rams stood more prominent than others.
Luke King, a sophomore Ram, was able to make his presence felt by making 11 assists and nine points on serves. King was helped by his team-mate Chris Miglin who kept the scoreboard ticking by adding a total of five kills whereas Mike Gesicki added four of his own.
Their recent win has enabled the number one ranking Rams to get a ticket into the state semi-finals that is scheduled to be played on Tuesday at South Brunswick High School. The team that the Rams will be facing is St Joseph-Metuchen.
