Question:

Cherry Tomato plant question?

Hubby pinches some of the plant at the 'V" off on regular plants. Do you need to do that on these small guys also? Some times he is pinching off ones with tomatoes on them. Is this right??? Doesn't sound right to me? I want all these as I can get...

Do you stake yours or just let them go wild? Thanks !! :)

  1. Pinching them back makes for bigger tomatoes and a plant with a better & stronger habit.  Bigger is not so much bigger for cherry tomatoes, and if you let them put out more branches, the more tomatoes you get (even if the plant is unruly).  It's true the plant won't be as strong, but cherry tomato season is relatively short and your main tomatoes should be ripening up by the time that matters.

  2. It's true that your plant will be stronger if you take off some of the extra "branches", but with cherry tomatoes you want quantity! Tell hubby to leave it alone!  Also, cherry tomato plants tend to be fairly strong in my experience, but I would suggest staking it just to give it added stability.

  3. I had some and I just let them grow.  We had oodles of them!  Maybe you need to slap 'hubby's' hand!  hehe
