Question:

Cherry Tomatoes...when to expect fruit?

Hello

I live in the North of England. Early in May, I planted a packet of out of date (by two years) cherry tomato seeds. Everyone of them has taken. So, now I have them planted in containers, and they are standing at about 4-6 inches high, with good leaf foilage. However, I have misplaced the packet and do not know the name of the plant or anything to do with it, other than that I could sow seeds to late May. Please if anyone could help me with regard to if or when to expect fruit. My neighbour has said that the first frost will get my tomatoes, but surely they won't be growing still so late in the year. Oh yes, I forgot, if it helps, I got the seeds a couple of years ago free with cereal. It was an Alan Titchmarsh complimentry gift.

  1. Hi from the South of England but a Northerner by birth !!  Ok my kids are growing toms in tubs - they have just got yellow flowers on them and we could see yesterday a very tiny green ball - the making of the fruit - yes tomatoes are from the fruit family not vegetable.  Have you given them a tom feed ?  Usually every fortnight and keep well watered this time of yr.  90 days from plant to sow is about average - they love best sunny spot in the garden, move them if you need to.  The plants will need support via bamboo canes or similar shortly to take the weight of any crop best to secure them now ready.  The yellow flowers will die back then the toms will appear.   Good luck  :)

  2. Regardless of where they're grown, tomatoes usually bear ripe fruit about 90 days after the seeds germinate (sprout). They will then continue to bear fruit until the fall, longer in milder climates.
