was the chesapeake bay bridge-tunnel built so they would not have to use ferries anymore? if not then why was it built?

  1. It became more feasible as traffic volumes increased to have a bridge rather than use ferrys.  Also, there's a big honkin' naval base there and this way they don't have to worry about waiting for bridges to open or cross-traffic traversing the mouth of the bay.


  2. WOW, you mean cars travel the bridge?  I thought it was built so that there would be great flounder fishing......  Who knew??

  3. it is a major traffic route between norfolk va. and the eastern shore of maryland and virginia and all eastern cities. there is a ten dollar toll for autos.

  4. As traffic increased it made ferry service less feasible and there was a need for a way to move more the traffic easier and faster.

  5. I think it was created so that cars could get over the the Eastern Shore a lot easier.
