Cheshire beats Staples-Westport by 3-1 in Class L Volleyball State Championship final
Cheshire boys volleyball team was able take down Staples-Westport on Friday, June 10, by 3-1. Cheshire won the match at 12-25, 25-23, 26-24 and 25-22 and has earned itself the title of the Class L Volleyball State Championship.
The coach of the Rams, Sue Bavone, made commented on the final match and said, "This one was a little different. The atmosphere was much different. Many more fans, much louder, hot as heck in here. They were just nervous, our passing was a little shaky and
that was why they were able to roll over us in that first game. Once they got into the atmosphere and settled down on the passing, that was the key."
The first set of the game was lost by the Rams by quite a margin but they redeemed themselves by winning the next three sets after putting up a tough fight at Fairfield Warde High School. The celebrations at the end of the match were loud and long as the
Rams have been able to end their season with zero losses and 22 wins.
On the other hand, the number three ranked Wreckers have been able to earn a total of 18 wins in this season while their losses equal to be five in all.
The first set of the game did not go well for the Rams as they took some time in coming into form. Staples took advantage of the lack of coordination that the Rams were experiencing and were able to secure themselves a lead. Once they had the lead, Staples
kept on extending their advantage. As the attack of the Rams was out of sync, Staples was able to win the opening set of the game by quite a margin at 25-12.
The second set started off much better than the first one for the Rams as they were able to come out strong and take the lead by a margin of four points. However, Staples was not about to give up and kept the competition alive by staying close all through
and eventually took the lead for themselves at 12-11. The Rams took the lead again at 18-14 but Staples did not give up and were able to tie the match at 19 and then again at 20. The Rams were finally able to put on a spurt of speed and bag the second set
of the game at 25-23.
The third set took on a competitive tone as both the Staples and the Rams stayed almost neck to neck with each other for most part of the game. The match was tied at 14-14 and it got into a tie position much later at 24-24 as well. However, the Rams were
able to seal the deal on the third set at 26-24.
The fourth set of the match was intense as well but it ended well for the Rams who won it at 25-22.
