Cheshire boys volleyball team squeaks past Newington by 3-2 to cap perfect season – Volleyball news
Cheshire boys volleyball team took on the Newington team on Monday in a volleyball match. In an exciting five set long battle, the Rams were able to hand out a defeat to Newington at 3-2.
25-21, 23-25, 29-27, 22-25 and 15-13 was the official score line as the Rams were cheering along loudly with their fans that filled the gym of Cheshire High School. The visitors left the courts disappointed at their close defeat.
With their recent win, the Number One ranked Rams team was able to cap off its regular season with highly impressive statistics. They have tallied a total of 17 victories in the regular season while suffering no loss against any of the competing teams.
Despite the fact that regular season record of the second ranked Newington is commendable, it still falls short when compared with that of the Rams. The number of times that Newington has been able to register wins total to 13. These victories have been
achieved at the cost of experiencing a total of three losses.
The start of the first set of the match saw both teams go in for the kill. The initial few points were intensely contested by both the Rams as well as Newington. However, as the set reached its middle stages, the Rams were able to push past. Newington did
not let them go too far and kept trailing behind. The Rams had a quick succession of points in the final stages of the opening set of the game and were able to seal the deal at 25-21.
The loss of the first set did not go down well with Newington and they came out strong in the second set. Newington was able to outplay the Rams in almost all aspects of the game. The defence of Newington worked particularly well to limit the Rams from going
on long runs. As a result, the second set of the match was bagged by Newington at 25-23.
The third set took on an intensely competitive tone as both the Rams and Newington were hoping to pressure the other by getting a one set advantage. However, the Rams were the ones who were able to secure the third set at 29-27. Newington took the fourth
one at 25-22 while the final set of the game went the way of the Rams at 15-13.
When the match had reached its close, Ryan Cuppernull who is a junior on the Rams team, made the following comments, "This is huge. This was for an undefeated season, the first one in the program. It means a lot."
With their perfect record the Rams are ready to close out the regular season and are looking toward future glory.
