  1. A bar is a bank of sand at the mouth of a river. A spit is a sandy point projecting into the sea. A tombolo covers both of these, as its a sandy deposit.

Chesil beach is probably not a bar because its not at the mouyh of a river?

  2. its actually a Tombolo.

  3. Sand Bar: in physical geography, a ridge of sand or silt crossing an estuary under water or raised by wave action above sea-level, forming an impediment to navigation. When a river enters a tidal sea its rate of flow is checked and the material it carries in suspension is deposited in a shifting bar crossing the channel from bank to bank. Where the channel is only partly closed, a spur of this character is called a "spit." A bar may be produced by tidal action only in an estuary or narrow gulf where the tides sweep the loose sand backwards and forwards, depositing it. where the motion of the water is checked. Bar: where a spit grows across a bay. A bar can eventually enclose the bay to create a lagoon.

Spit: a long, narrow accumulation of sand and shingle formed by longshore drift and deposited where the coastline abruptly changes direction. One end of the spit is connected to the land and the other end projects out to the sea, often with a curved (hooked) end.

    Spit

Longshore Drift transports material along the coast. When the mouth of a river, or an indented area, is encountered material starts to be deposited. The deposition begins where the coast changes direction and extends down coast in the direction of longshore drift. The result is a narrow ridge of material ( sand or pebbles ) attached to the mainland at one end and terminating in the sea. The spit may extend sufficiently to form a lagoon.
