Actually there is no type of special music that chess players, being one my self, listen to.  Most chess players normally listen to music that is favored by other people.  We are no different the others.

I am an avid chess player and coach. My music tastes are eclectic, but I like heavy rock (Led Zeppelin especially), some Classical (especially Bach), even some New Age (Clannad,etc). I don't know what angle your research is taking, but one fact you may find interesting is that psychologists find chess players to be stimulus-seekers generally. I wonder whether your research will find some sort of musical correlation.

Genres I'm not keen on are pop, country or rap.

Don't like much pop, hate rap and RnB. Anything else is ok.
