The best move for black is a:8 to a:6. Then e:1 takes e:7. Then the best move for black says f:6 to d:5. Why is that the best move for black? I am not a chess buff, not by a long shot, but I can usually figure the puzzles out after 1 or 2 tries... I had to use the hint and I still don't understand why it would be the best move. Could someone explain or walk me through the rest of the game...theoretically, even..? Thanks.

  1. f6:d5 is given as best because it wins a pawn immediately and places the Knight where it is forking the White Queen and Rook.  If White moves his Queen away from f4, say Q:f7, then Black simply captures the Rook with N:e7 and emerges a whole Rook ahead.  Admittedly, the position is still messy because of Black's exposed King, but the author of the problem has apparently concluded that Black has a winning material advantage.

  2. It is important to look at what you have done, and your opponents possible responses.  When ...Nxd5, you are now "forking" two of white pieces.  Your knight is attacking both the Queen on f4 and the rook on e7.

The Fork is so powerful because white can't respond to both threats, only one.  In most cases, they will move the queen, as it is the more valuable piece.  This leaves black to when the exchange with Nxe7.  The 3 point knight for a 5 point rook.  The game is technically "won" for black.
