I recently started playing chess again after stopping in 5th grade (now in 9th) and after the brief rusty period am doing pretty good now.

I think I am almost ready for my first tournament,I just need a bit more practice in endgame, but I have on question I am afraid to ask.

If you do a certain string of moves is that automaticly an opening or does your opponent have to do a certain set of moves to for it to be the opeing.

  1. opening is for the white... opening is basically the opening... dude.. read some more... buy books of bruce pandofinni.. chess openings zaps and traps...

  2. No, if black played differently it would not be the 2 Knights.

Say for example after 1.e4 black plays 1....c5. This is the Sicilian. Just because you play e4,Nf3,Bc4,Ng5 (as in the video), does not make it the 2Knights. It depends on what Black plays too.

The opening is really the position on the board. You can transpose into some openings, for example you may start 1.Nf3 - which can become the Reti, the English, the Queen's Gambit and many others - it all depends on which moves are played by white and black.

    Good luck!

  3. The opening is actually dictated by both players, and both players first move will have a huge impact on the type of game which is played.

In the case of King;'s Pawn opening, if black responds with the symmetrical move than it will be an open game, but if any of the other alternative moves are chosen than the game is becomes a semi closed one. Similar situation with the Queen's pawn opening, but instead the game becomes closed or semi closed.

The 2 Knights opening would always transpose into another position with whites 3rd move, due to the tactical positioning white chooses to play. After the intial 1 e4 e5 2 Nf3 Nc6, the following transpositions can occur:-

    3 Bc4 - italian Opening

3 Bb5 - Spanish Opening also refered to as the Ruy Lopez

    3 Nc3 - 3 Knights Game

    3 d4 - Scotch Game

    3 g3 -Konstantinpolsky Opening

    3 Be2 - Inverted Hungarian Opening

    3 c3 - Ponziani Opening

Black can transpose the game even further with their 3rd move, transpositons which can occur after the Italian Opening/ 1 e4 e5 2 Nf3 Nc6 3 Bc4.... are as follows

    3 ... Bc5 Guicco Piano

3 ... Nf6 2 Knights defence also referred to as the Chigorin counterattack

    3 ... Be7 Hungarian defence

    3 ... d6 Paris defence

However opening positions as referred to in your first question do in fact exist, but there are commonly referred to as systems, and the moves don't have a specific order. Usually the formation can be established in response against several different attacks or defences. examples include the King's Indian Attack for white and the Hedgehog for black.
