  1. Hi,

The Staunton pattern is 150+ years old.  Different chess sets have been used throughout the centuries.  The Chesmayne sets are 'triangular'.  Each piece is indicated by a 'monogram' ie: KI, QU, RO, BS, KT, PA.  You may like to visit my chess web page below?  You can also PRINT out any orthodox chess set and board in the world - FREE!

    Yours,

    Chesmayne.

  2. Haha @ the rock

  3. Chess men have been traditionally been made out of wood.  First a block is turned on a lathe, then a little extra work is done with a band saw or jig-saw.

The pawns are easy, because of cylindrical symmetry.  They just need the lathe, then they're done.

The rooks get turned, then you need to knock out a few chunks for the parapets.

The bishop is easy, too.  First turn it on the lathe, then a small cut to show the mitre.

    Same for king and queen.

Okay.  The knight is very different from all the others because it requires a lot of carving to show the detail of the horses head.  This extra work and time on the part of the craftsman drives up the cost of the set.

The German Knight is a result of using a smaller number of manufacturing steps to reduce cost.

This only applies to chess sets that are made of wood.  If they are plastic, like the common Druke design, then they are made by injection-molding and the intricate knight will be just as easy to form as the simple pawn.

  4. they look different on all types of stainton boards but its still staunton style due to its similiar appearance just the detail thats a bit different. i have invented my own chess piece call a rock or stone, it can't capture and it can't be taken it can just block checks and close off files and things.
