Chess terms that begin with K
If you are having a hard time getting started at chess, there is no need to panic as you are not the only one out there. There are thousands of people like you who are scratching their heads right now, trying to figure out what all those fancy words mean.
There is no need to give up the game because we are going to be explaining to you all the commonly used chess terminologies. You will not only remember the words but will also have a good time going through them. To make your life easier still, we will be
explaining all the important terms in Chess which begin with K.
We will begin your lesson with the simpler of the K’s. The first term at your service is a Key Square. No, it does not open any door to vistas of chess knowledge; it is much simpler than that. A Key square is an important square on the chess board. It is
of value either to you or your opponent. For instance, the last square of any rank on which a pawn has to be promoted will be a key square to both players. One player would like to block the pawn’s progress by stationing a piece on the last square, while the
opponent would try to move the stationed piece by attacking it. Another way to make a piece move is to ‘Kick’ it. This is done when a player wants to clear a path for him/herself. The only way of kicking a piece is to attack it. In this way, it will either
move to another square or chose to get captured.
If you are reading this article, that means you are interested in chess and there is probably very little that you dislike about the game. However, we know of something that you would not like at all in chess and that is a Kibitz. A Kibitz is a spectator
who is constantly making audible comments while a chess game is in progress. As you would have guessed, this disturbs the whole thought process of the players which can cause them to make a wrong move. Therefore, a kibitz can change the outcome of a game drastically.
This is the reason why it is considered highly improper to make comments while a chess game is being played.
The most important K in chess is the King. Therefore, there are several King related terms that you should know about. The first is a Kingside. It is the side of the board on the left of the king’s starting position. Another variation of the term is the
King pawn. As the name suggests, it is the pawn which is standing on the king’s file at the start of the game. Similarly, a King Bishop is that bishop which is adjacent to the king’s file. Apart from these, there is also a term known as the King hunt. When
a player repeatedly attacks the enemy king so that he is forced to move into a corner, the process is called the king hunt. This is done to place the opponent’s king in a vulnerable position so that checkmate can be achieved easily.
In chess, as in many other games, knockout tournaments are also held. A series of matches take place in which the loser is eliminated in each round, with the others progressing to the next one. In matches where a player has a time constraint, they can undergo
the Kotov syndrome. This happens when a player cannot figure out what move to make, even after he has thought long and hard about it, so they make a move which has not been thought through properly. This often results in a major blunder.
With that, we come to the end of our lesson. After reading this through, you should be in a position to avoid any major blunders, as you journey on to explore the world of chess.
