Chest muscle surgery jeopardises Cleveland Browns DT Phil Taylor’s future -NFL News
It was not the start that the Cleveland Browns were hoping for their rookie minicamp as no sooner the players and officials gathered to mark the opening, coach, Pat Shurmur, dispensed the bad news that defensive tackle, Phil Taylor, had sustained a chest
injury that could also hurt his chances for the upcoming season.
Shurmur told the player’s teammates and officials that he would have a surgery for the torn chest muscle and therefore would also skip the training camp.
Browns, just like other teams, have arranged the minicamp to facilitate rookie players to get to know the playbook and immerse into rules and formalities of the team.
As a matter of fact, it is the first official activity that the team has organised since they were ousted from the 2011 National Football League (NFL) regular season.
Also, it is rather unfortunate for the team that it misses out on some players due to the injuries and other problems almost every year and this year has proved to be no different.
The coach was rather rueful while pointing out at the prospective absence of the player. He said:
"It was just one of those things that happen. It's unfortunate."
While giving more details around the planned procedure, the coach added that the player was due to have the operation next week and only then they should be able to ascertain a timeline for his recovery and return.
According to him:
"It's too early to speculate. Typically with these surgeries, the rehab is months so I don't want to say exactly. I don't want to cancel him out for the year, no."
The player who himself was present at the team’s training facility during the opening of the camp, declined to offer any comment on the injury and details surrounding its occurrence.
Shurmur too refrained from saying too much about cause of the injury. The coach twisted the question about the incident and said:
"It provides opportunity for other guys to fill in. We never want to lose a player. Unfortunately, at this point, Phil has to deal with what professional athletes have to deal with sometimes."
The Browns are going to open their next season campaign with a game against the Philadelphia Eagles and are optimistic about Phil’s return to the squad by then.
