Chest pains while running?

Every day I run just a mile to stay in shape, and for the past week or so my chest has hurt after running for a few minutes. Today I running and on my last lap my chest, right where my heart is, hurt very bad. It hurt so much I stopped running and started to walk. And I'm only 16. I'm not out of shape, but I'm not in the best shape of my life either. It scares me a lot and I'm wondering what to do.

  1. You need to seek medical attention, most likely by a cardiologist. Discontinue running until you get medical clearance. Heart diesase can effect people of any age, so don't just brush this off thinking you are too young.  It's better to have it checked out and be nothing than to just ignore this problem and have it become worse.

  2. Im not sure what it is but i had it yesterday when running i would advise taking a week off

  3. I run 25-30 miles a week and in the past 2 years have had the chest pain that you are describing twice. The first time it started as soon as I started my run and the last time it started a couple of miles into a run. I just went home and took the next day off. I've never had any chest pain since...I just thought it was my body telling me it needed a break, and I think that's all it was. I'm not suggesting that you don't seek medical attention, but I wouldn't worry too much...this doesn't mean you have some kind of heart condition. But if it happens again, or continues to happen then I would definitely see a doctor. It couldn't hurt. Also consider your environment...was it unusually hot out? Had you just eaten? Do you ever suffer from heart burn? Were you pushing yourself harden than usual? Have you had a lot of stress lately?

I hope you get this resolved. I'm sure it's nothing...just take it easy for a day or two and make sure you get a good warm up before you start running. Speed walk 1 lap before you start running, and jog your second lap before you get up your speed. Also, make sure you are well hydrated.
