Chester Giles, Jean ABD El Nour:
Top performers from the quarterfinals of FIBA Asia Champions Cup (Part-1)
Lebanon’s Al Riyadi Beirut vs. Iraq’s Duhok
On Friday, Lebanon’s Al Riyadi Beirut and Duhok of Iraq took on each other in the first quarterfinal of the 2011 FIBA Asia Champions Cup. Duhok, who have been a bit of a surprise package in this year’s championship failed to repeat
their heroics against the Lebanese outfit and went down by 106-80. Down below are the top performers form the game-1 of the quarter finals.
Chester Jarell Giles
American Chester Jarell Giles has been one of the revelations in this tournament. The burly centre led Duhok in all four games during the preliminary round of the tournament. However, due to lack of support from the remaining players,
Giles failed to lead Duhok towards victories. And on Friday, it happened again.
Playing at the Phil Sports Arena, Giles showcased his brilliance once again as he erupted with a game-high 29 points and clutched 13 boards. Giles was phenomenal from the field and connected on 51 percent of his field goal attempts.
Jean ABD El Nour
Al Riyadi forward Jean ABD El Nour is having a phenomenal tournament. On Friday, he posted another brilliant performance and spearheaded his team to a blow out 106-80 victory.
Nour powered the Lebanese team with a team high 24 points, including two blows from beyond the arc. Jean was absolutely magnificent from the field and connected on 10 shots out of 12 attempted. In less than 21 minutes of the playing
time, the 27-year-old kept on rattling the Iraqi defence as Al Riyadi never trailed after the first quarter.
El Cheikh Fadi El Khatib
El Cheikh Fadi El Khatib also had a good night for the Lebanese as he landed 21 points and grabbed 5 rebounds. El Khatib also buried two 3-pointers in the game and finished on an impressive 8-of-14 shooting from the field.
Mohammed Salah Mahdi
The only player, other than Chester Jarell Giles who posted a decent performance for Duhok was Mohammed Salah Mahdi. Salah finished the game with 14 points and gathered 2 boards to lend some support to Chester. Although Salah’s
shooting percentage from the field was quite impressive, however, he was allowed very few opportunities by hustling AL Riyadi defence to take shots. Mahdi connected 63 percent from the field and 67 percent of the free throws.
