Chevy 2001, cavalier Z24; Is an 02 oxygen sensor problem related to a catalytic/catalystic converter issue?

Does anyone know if an oxygen sensor problem could be in any way related to an issue with a catalytic/catalystic converter? (spelling?)

  1. I would say its a possibility if not enough of the air is getting through the catalytic converter...My s10 i have has a bad O2 sensor but it runs fine..  


  2. there is not enought information to really go on here. basically the o2sensors are the only device that can tell you if your catalytic converter has gone bad they also monitor the amount of unburnt fuel flowing through the exhaust and comunicate with your powertrain module in order to correct fuel management during  a closed loop. when the converter gets really bad the housing will begin to rattle. if your computer has stored a p0420/ catylist low efficientcy, you definately need a cat. converter. if you have an o2 sensor code like p0132 i would try replacing the sensor first and if you end up replacing a converter it is never a bad idea to repace all o2 sensors while you already have the converter out, good luck
