  1. If you want to fix the stuck lifter, you will have to spend money on it. How soon before you replace it with the 350? You can sometimes get them loose, but you may need to replace the cam and lifters.

  2. On the 305, and with the way it is mounted, it is the front left lifter that goes, due to oil downflow or gravity.  That's cyl #1.

The also have an oil starvation problem with all hollow push rods, like straws, but clogged.  It usually wears cam lobes.

If you can't cover up the problem and restore function with Lucas Oil, then nothing will.

I have nursed this engine along successfully in a 1984 Bonneville, and in many others.

BTW, there is no substitute for Lucas, you don't have to shop and compare.

  3. No, it isn't worth it. The usual cause for the noise is a worn out cam lobe plus the lifter it is riding on. This is a major job. If you're replacing the motor, it's a no brainer.

  4. Its been a long time since I worked on an engine....but- can you pull the valve cover and check the valve clearance?

It should be very easy to do. There may be too much space (or too little) between the valve end and the lifter. It happens.

On many older cars you had to get your valves adjusted from time to time. Take a look at it- the problem may go away with a minor adjustment.
