Question:

Chevy 305, mechanical pump problems?

I bought a used 305, and put it in the car. Everything is correct, timing, ect. If I pour gasoline directly into the carburetor it seems to want to start. The fuel pump is new and I know it works because I tried it in another car. I even tried a bucket of gasoline with a hose directly attached to the fuel pump and still the gasoline is not getting to the carburetor, let alone coming out of the fuel pump.

What would be the problem? Thanks.

  1. you may not have th rod sitting on the cam correctly to make it work or it may not be the exact pump for the car

  2. Don't hate me for asking, but there is a metal cylinder that goes between the actuator arm of the mechanical fuel pump & the camshaft. Is that cylinder in place? You should have had to thread a bolt partway into the block to hold it in place while changing the fuel pump.

If yes, is the lobe on the camshaft that is supposed to operate the fuel pump still there?

I ask the second part because I have a 350 small block with the exact same issue and I suspect that the cam lobe got rounded off somehow.

    Hope this helps.

  3. CK THE ROD THAT THE PUMP RUNS OFF OF

MAKE SURE THE LOBE ON THE CAM ISN'T WORN DOWN

  4. Make sure the lines are hooked on correctly. Take the hose from the carb. and put it in a gas can. Crank the engine and see if it sucks gas or blows bubbles.

  5. there is a shaft that runs off the cam shaft to the fuel pump pull the two bolts that mount the pump to the block if there is a plate between

the pump and block pull the two bolt holding that in there has to be a rod that slides out to drive the pump if its not there that's it if it is there

the cam lobe for the pump is flat or timing chain snapped or upper gear is worn out chevy used a nylon covered upper gear in some 305

and that all there is for the pump you can check to see if the camshaft

is turning to rule out the chain by taking off the distributor cap making the rotor with the base and bumping the starter by turning the key fast and letting go and see if it moved

  6. fuel pump rod ,wrong or not in the hole.....cam lobe that drives the fuel pump wore down to far or wrong fuel pump for the engine ,or pinholes in fuel lines (will not let pump push fuel because of air in fuel line)
