Working on an 89 Chevy Cavalier. With the 4 cyl. The engine runs with the key in the start position, but with the key in the run mode the car dies. We have changed the module, it has the correct resistance on the crank position censor, the voltage is correct on all legs of the ignition switch and the fuel pressure is normal. We have also checked all of the fusible links. Why wont my car stay running??????

  1. sounds like your losing 12 volts in the run mode to the systems that need it. You really need a wiring diagram that shows where the 12 volts should be when in the run mode. You could be losing 12 volts to the ignition or engine computor in the run mode. Might check the ignition and pcm fuses. Some GM products also have 2 small wires that go up to the key cylinder lock that lets the computor recondise the ignition key, if one of these wires is broken,it will not stay running.

  2. the ignition switch is bad in the run position.

  3. "Ignition Block!" In the Block there is a Resister that Power the system at a lower voltage after start, If it's bad Block must be Replaced.

  4. try replacing the ignition switch... if it will run in the crank position but not run... start the car slowly let the key back to the run position till the starter stops cranking does it run?  any way sounds as if your ignition switch has gone bad

  5. could be the fuel pump or the fuel filter or the fuel pressure regualtor or timing belt
