Hi, Have a problem with 1999 Chevy Silverado, when to get the car inspected, there is no communication between OBD 2 connector and the inspection machine, I checked all the fuses, and they're ok, anybody has come across a problem like this where there is no information coming out of the ODB 2 connector an the car. Thanks

  1. This is not a problem with your truck. This is a problem with the software of the smog machine. I am guessing it is made by SUN. Also, this is not grounds for failing the smog inspection. (At least in California) It should only be considered an incomplete test.

I do know SUN had a communication problem with some vehicles that was supposed to have been addressed though a software upgrade a couple of years ago. Even if it isn't a SUN analyzer I am suspecting the machine itself is having communication issues with your truck.

I would suggest having a smog inspection performed somewhere else. If they successfully complete the test, I would immediately report the other machine to your state agency. This isn't an act of revenge. It is a means of making sure this machine is in compliance so other people aren't denied a completed inspection.

If your truck was actually not able to communicate through the diagnostic connector, it would turn on the check engine light.

  2. Most common cause is a blown fuse. Did you check both fuses boxes? The one under the dash and the one under the hood near the battery?
