UPDATE: Supposedly the deal is done, earlier Friday, a source close to the situation said that Chevrolet has agreed to terms with Joe Gibbs Racing to buy Tony Stewart out of his contract with the #20-Toyota Sprint Cup racing team. Stewart will indeed be making the move to Haas CNC Racing, a rumor that has been circulating for months. Supposedly Stewart’s new sponsor will be Office Depot and terms have been finalized regarding the impending sponsorship. In addition, Stewart will be joined by current #12 Penske Racing driver Ryan Newman, who would be sponsored by Burger King. No word yet on what car numbers the drivers will run and an announcement could come as early as next week at the Daytona International Speedway.

I didn’t know manufacturers could buy out a driver’s contract. hmm... can't say I'm surprised though. This has been going on ever since last year. I'll just be glad when they make an official announcement.

If Newman does leave Penske who do you think will drive the #12 next year? Do you think Stewart will be successful driving for his own team the first year or do you think he’ll struggle?

  1. I can't imagine Tony Stewart in a Office Depot sponsored car. lol

  2. NO.

  3. I think it's the worst idea. Toyota / JGR & Home depot are a good thing. Haas CNC has always been 2nd tier. The need to drive a Chevy can't be that great? Sounds like he's getting a part ownership dealand sees' that as a long term good  deal. I still think the grass is not greener away from JGR. As for Mr. Friday(Newman)??? Dodge is shaky, and he lost his sponser due to the verizon deal. He could do worse, Mayfield is still looking for a job. Then again, so am I...........

  4. Here's to hoping this is true, oh what a happy day it will be.

Woudn't it be nice if such a big name walked away from such a strong team just because of the Toyota moniker?  LOL

    Toyota has the aidz!!!

  5. I really dislike too much change.  But if it is a done deal well what can ya do??  But wouldn't a team of Tony, Ryan and Martin be awesome?? And they can give the #12 to Casey who will take off flying.

  6. If he does leave to drive for a chevy again ill be happy.  but it really doesnt matter what he drives he'll win.  alot of people down him for driving toyotas but he didnt have a choice in it, it was the owners of the team.  i think the real reason why he will race for a chevy team is because of his dirtcars.

one more thing that people need to think about is that toyotas are made in america now more that japan.  its a japanese name but its american made,.  believe me i lived by the plant in texas and scene it and looked it up.

  7. I'm thinking Casey Mears will drive the #12 car. Stewart's team will probably run alright next year, they'll probably have both cars in the top 15 in points but he will not do as good as this year.

  8. thank God

    smoke back in a chevy

  9. I think he will really miss the resources of the Gibbs racing camp, and he may even wish he was in a Toyota by the end of the year. I hope none of this is true, because I can't imagine Tony racing anything but the big orange Home Depot 20 car.
